Ah, the decline and fall of the good, old-fashioned adventure strip - a Saturday matinee in picture form.
 
In the early days these strips made up more than half the comic. By 1960 it was down to two, two page adventure strips each week - though this was still a third of the twelve page comic! In 1961 the page count went up to sixteen, and a third two-page adventure strip was added.
 
By 1967 this was down to two, and in 1970 it was reduced to one (although, just to make things complicated, it did briefly go back to two in 1971, when the page count of the comic was increased from 20 to 24). The adventure strips were dropped completely in 1976 (although they continued in the Dandy into the eighties).

Oh, one last thing; I haven't listed any of the text-only stories that the Beano ran from 1938 until the early fifties - partly because there were too many, and also because I find them rather boring. Sorry.
