ON SCREEN

With Ethel gone, it was truly the end of an era, but the show carried on regardless. The sandwich quiz was replaced with the household cleaning quiz (see songs page), the lyrics of which reflected the new democratic set-up in the house.

Madcap cleaner Maisie McConochie (Kate Copstick) was introduced as a kind of replacement for Ethel, but failed to catch on. Comedian Andrew O'Connor also made regular appearances in this series. "Interestingly", Kate and Andrew both went on to star in the BBC's On the Waterfront the following summer.

BEHIND THE SCENES

Another development was the Sunday morning edition. This was a watered down version of the usual show, with crapper guests, more interruptions from dreary tat such as Follyfoot, and generally only suitable for the easily pleased. Laid-back scruff Jules and American spoilt-brat Nadia joined the cast to help cover the extra shifts.

Towards the end of the series, plans were afoot at TVS which would mean the biggest changes yet for their flagship programme...
