| No. 75 |
(In case you never noticed, No. 75 was - unsurprisingly - the house to the right of No. 73.)
THE NEIGHBOURS
For the first five years of the show, No. 75 was inhabited by the straight-laced Mr and Mrs Edwards. Martin was, to say the least, rather scathing of their neighbours' shenanigans, although Hazel was more friendly. The couple were played by Richard Addison (later seen in EastEnders as Pat Coombs' son) and Jeannie Crowther, seen in various things which I can't remember. Although they generally provided comic relief, they did occasionally act as presenters, introducing items and interviewing guests.
The Edwards left at the end of the seventh series. The final episode featured Martin being deluged by a burst water pipe and succumbing to his long-overdue nervous breakdown.
At the beginning of the next series the house was empty, but in October it was taken over by the mysterious driving instructor Hamilton Dent. On meeting their twitchy, badly dressed neighbour, Harry in particular was worried about his sanity. Gradually Hamilton won the trust and then the friendship of the gang, and when they moved to the 7T3 theme park to escape the bulldozers, he went with them.
| BEHIND THE SCENES |
Due to the limited space available for sets, all that was ever seen of No. 75 was the back of the house, on the other side of 73's garden fence. Interestingly, the design which was used throughout the show's run appeared to suggest that the Edwards lived somwhere in No. 73 itself - the unseen space behind the front room, in fact. In its own way, this was as charming as the celebrated design flaw in Coronation Street which positioned the Rovers' toilets in Albert Tatlock's kitchen.
